What we collect and why
The newspaper works with as little personal data as it can.
Personalization starts with what you tell us, not with what we infer. You can read the shared front page without an account, and you can see and delete what we hold.
What we store for signed-in readers
- Your name, email address and a password hash.
- The interests you choose, the stories you follow, the articles you save and the feedback you give.
- Reading progress, if you leave reading history enabled. You can clear it at any time.
- The time of your last meaningful visit to each followed story, so we can tell you what changed.
- Your display preferences and an optional local news region.
What we do not do
- We do not infer sensitive personal characteristics from reading habits.
- We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising.
- We do not optimize editorial ranking for time spent or clicks.
Product analytics
We record a small fixed set of events such as edition opens, article completions, saves and follows, keyed to your account when signed in and otherwise anonymous. Aggregate web analytics are collected without cookies. Questions put to the research desk are logged with their answers for cost control and editorial review.
Signed-out readers
If you choose interests without signing in, they are kept in a signed cookie in your browser and carried over when you create an account.
This page describes the demonstration build. A production privacy policy will be reviewed by counsel before launch.
